Sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ) youth often encounter multiple risk factors, have fewer protective factors (such as a sense of connectedness to school and family), and experience more bullying, harassment, alienation, suicide ideation, and substance abuse than their heterosexual peers. Over a decade's worth of research evidence identifies how educational institutions have a legal, ethical, and professional responsibility to respond proactively to the pressing health, safety, and educational needs of sexual and gender minority youth. Dr. Kristopher Wells will lead conversation focusing on the current troubling realities of sexual and gender minority students in our schools, how best to support their complex educational, health, and safety needs, and engage in a discussion identifying promising practices to support sexual and gender minority youth move from beyond simply trying to survive in their school environments to a place where they can develop the personal and institutional resilience necessary to thrive.
